Genesis 1:2-5
2 And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters. 3 And God said, Let there be light: and there was light. 4 And God saw the light, that it was good: and God divided the light from the darkness. 5 And God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And the evening and the morning were the first day.
Creation In The Raw
2 And the earth was without form, and void
The correct way to think about this phrase is like an embrio. An embrio is in perfect order even though it is not, in appearence, what it will become. There is neither chaos nor disorder.
The view that the universe began in chaos and was then ordered by the gods is ancient. It has been modernized and codified in the big-bang theory. It has been adopted and theologized by the church. But it is an error.
God is the God of order not chaos and disorder. He is the ultimate planner. He sees the end from the beginning. The Lamb was slain from the foundation of the world. His children have been known from the beginning. History is on course and on schedule.
Let There Be Light
3 And God said, Let there be light: and there was light.
Psalm 36:9 For with You is the fountain of life; in Your light we see light. In order to see someting a light must be turned on. The Word was, and is, that light. Jesus said, "I am the light of the world", John 8:12, 9:5.
John 1:1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 The same was in the beginning with God. 3 All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made. 4 In him was life; and the life was the Light of men. 5 And the Light shines in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not. 6 There was a man sent from God, whose name was John. 7 The same came for a witness, to bear witness of the Light, that all men through him might believe. 8 He was not that Light, but was sent to bear witness of that Light. 9 That was the true Light, which lighteth every man that comes into the world. 10 He was in the world, and the world was made by him, and the world knew him not. 11 He came unto his own, and his own received him not. 12 But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name: 13 Which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God. 14 And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.
What's In A Day?
5 And God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And the evening and the morning were the first day.
This is the best possible description of a 'day' that could be devised. Every human being in every culture for all time can under this. This is DAY ONE in an absolute sense, the very first day, One rotation of the earth is a nighttime followed by a morning followed by a daytime followed by an evening and back to nighttime again. The word 'day' is defined by its context. It CANNOT be wrenched out of its context as many would like to do, claiming that its duration cannot be known, except that it 'can't mean an ordinary day', according to their belief system.
By the way, because the rotation of the earth is slowing down and the days are getting longer (currently about 1 second per year), in the past, the earth would have spun faster and the days would have been even shorter than they are today! So, for those who wonder if those days were 24 hour days - the answer is no, they were more like 23 hour days! The length of the day is changing in the wrong direction.
